The collaboration will focus on experimental data and computational models used to predict heat-pipe performance at temperatures above 1652°F (900°C). [NuCube says](https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2026/08/25/3350433/0/en/nucube-energy-and-canadian-nuclear-laboratories-commence-research-and-development-project-supporting-advanced-reactors.html?_gl=1) the resulting data will expand the validation database for its models and could support the future licensing pathway for its reactor technology. ## Testing a key component of NuCube’s reactor Heat pipes are central to NuCube’s reactor architecture. Rather than relying on conventional coolant pumps, the company’s design uses heat pipes to transport thermal energy from the reactor core toward the power-conversion system. NuCube’s broader reactor platform is designed around [TRISO fuel](https://energylab.utah.gov/nuclear-energy/nucube-energy/) and a heat-pipe-cooled architecture intended to minimize moving parts. The company says its technology is being developed to produce both electricity and high-temperature [industrial heat](https://interestingengineering.com/energy/solar-collector-turns-sunlight-into-industrial-heat), with its website describing temperatures of up to about 2012°F (1,100°C). That high-temperature capability is particularly important for NuCube’s intended industrial applications. Instead, it addresses a fundamental engineering question. How accurately can computational models predict the behavior of the heat pipes under the extreme temperatures expected during operation? ## Why the data matters For advanced reactor developers, experimental validation is an important part of moving from a conceptual design toward a system that can eventually undergo regulatory review and testing. Under the new collaboration, CNL will qualify existing experimental data and benchmark computational models used to predict heat-pipe performance above 900°C. NuCube expects the resulting validation database to strengthen its technical case as development progresses. The work also builds on a broader research effort around NuCube’s technology. The company has previously worked with Idaho National Laboratory on computational analysis of a high-temperature heat exchanger, while an Idaho National Laboratory GAIN project with Argonne National Laboratory is examining autonomous operation and remote monitoring of the company’s microreactor. NuCube has also signed an agreement with the Utah San Rafael Energy Lab to site and test a microreactor in Orangeville, Utah, subject to the necessary development and regulatory steps. ## A microreactor designed for electricity and heat NuCube’s proposed reactor differs from conventional nuclear plants primarily in scale and architecture. The company is developing factory-built, transportable [microreactors](https://interestingengineering.com/energy/air-cooled-transportable-nuclear-micro-reactor) intended to be installed closer to customers rather than relying exclusively on large centralized generating stations. NuCube says its DeccaCell platform could provide up to 15 MW of power for periods ranging from seven to 30 years before refueling, although these remain company targets for a technology still under development. Potential applications include remote power, industrial facilities and other locations where grid access is limited or additional reliable power is required. The company is also pursuing a public-market transaction. In June, NuCube announced a business combination agreement with Launch Two Acquisition Corp., which could result in the combined company becoming publicly listed on Nasdaq or the NYSE if the transaction closes and applicable conditions are satisfied.
