Doosan Enerbility secures SMR equipment deal from TerraPower

SEOUL, Aug. 14 (Yonhap) -- Doosan Enerbility Co., a major South Korean plant builder, said Friday it has secured a contract from U.S. nuclear energy firm TerraPower to manufacture key equipment for its small modular reactor (SMR) project currently under construction in the United States.

The energy solutions provider under Doosan Group said it will manufacture the guard vessel, internal structures and support structures for TerraPower's Natrium advanced reactor, without disclosing the value of the deal.

The Natrium reactor is an advanced SMR that combines a sodium-cooled fast reactor with a molten-salt energy storage system.

The latest contract follows an agreement signed between the two companies in December 2024 to conduct preliminary reviews of the three major components for TerraPower's first Natrium reactor. The 345-megawatt unit broke ground earlier this year and is currently under construction in Wyoming.

The announcement comes as Bill Gates, TerraPower founder and chair, is in Seoul for talks with major South Korean companies and government officials on ways to expand cooperation in nuclear energy.
