[000.1-004.0] It's basically here, we pretty much have Robocop in Vancouver. [004.0-008.3] As of today, the Vancouver Police Department has announced that they are rolling out enforcement [008.3-009.3] by drone. [009.3-012.7] I mean, they're not getting drones to go out and hand out tickets or make arrests, [012.7-018.1] but they have connected drones that are situated at certain stations around the city that can [018.1-022.5] be summoned from an officer's body cam or dispatched based on calls that are coming [022.5-027.8] in to surveil, gather evidence they can provide footage to the VPD that they can watch from [027.8-033.7] on the ground and investigate and prioritize calls that are being sent to the police. [033.7-036.9] But the drones also have this massive surveillance capacity. [036.9-039.0] They have the ability to follow individuals. [039.0-042.9] They have the ability to film into backyards and private spaces that otherwise wouldn't [042.9-044.5] be visible from the street. [044.5-050.7] They have the ability to move much faster and much more covertly than an individual officer [050.7-052.9] or group of officers could on the street. [052.9-056.6] And while the Vancouver Police Department to their credit say they are not using the drones [056.6-062.6] for surveillance yet, that yet is doing a lot of heavy lifting because yet could mean [062.6-066.2] that this one day is something they are going to do, that they're going to use the drones [066.2-072.0] to target individuals who are persons of interest, to follow them to watch them and to gather [072.0-075.5] information that they otherwise would be unable to gather. [075.5-078.6] Enforcement by drone in Vancouver is here. [078.6-084.8] Expect to see cases involving drone footage and drones responding to police involved situations [084.8-086.6] where police draw their weapons. [086.6-090.5] And it's going to be very interesting to see how this plays out and how the use of the drones [090.5-096.7] respects the privacy rights of the citizens who live and expect to be protected in their [096.7-102.0] privacy, in their homes, in their backyards, and in their goings about within the city.
