Centrus and X-energy: HALEU Supply Is the Hard Gate for Advanced Nuclear

The useful headline is not “SMRs are solved.” The source-backed headline is narrower: Centrus Energy says it signed a definitive contract to provide X-energy with low-enriched uranium and high-assay low-enriched uranium enrichment services for initial Xe-100 small modular reactor and TRISO-X fuel deployments.

That matters because the advanced-reactor story keeps coming back to a plain constraint. Designs can look strong on paper, and power buyers can want firm clean electricity, but the fuel chain decides whether a reactor plan can become a schedule, a licence and eventually a megawatt-hour.

What changed

Centrus’s release describes a signed definitive contract with X-energy. The company says the supply commitments involve LEU and HALEU enrichment services, with quantities expected to support X-energy’s initial Xe-100 small modular reactors and TRISO-X fuel deployments. It also says X-energy will provide prepayments to Centrus to support Centrus’s domestic commercial enrichment-capacity program.

World Nuclear News reports the same agreement and adds useful context: the LEU and HALEU are to be produced at Centrus’s American Centrifuge Plant in Pike County, Ohio, while the HALEU would be supplied to X-energy’s fuel subsidiary TRISO-X for coated-particle fuel fabrication at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. WNN also notes that X-energy’s Xe-100 is a pebble-bed high-temperature gas reactor concept rated at 200 MW thermal, or about 80 MW electric.

The fuel-chain implication is the point. Centrus says the agreement builds on a $3 billion contingent LEU and HALEU backlog, of which $2.4 billion is definitized. The company also ties the buildout to a recent $900 million DOE HALEU enrichment award. Those are capital and demand signals; they are not the same as delivered fuel, final licences or operating reactors.

Do not overclaim the agreement as an NRC construction permit, operating licence, completed TRISO-X fuel campaign, completed Ohio enrichment expansion, completed Oak Ridge fuel fabrication, Dow Seadrift deployment, Amazon-backed deployment, data-center power deal or commercial electricity. The evidence supports a signed enrichment-services contract and strategic fuel-chain signal.
