Deep Fission’s DOE Safety-Design Gate: Underground SMR Promise, Still Not Commercial Power

The useful headline is narrower than the hype version. Deep Fission says the U.S. Department of Energy approved a Nuclear Safety Design Agreement for its Gravity Nuclear Reactor, an underground small modular pressurized-water-reactor concept planned for a Parsons, Kansas pilot.

That is a real Energy-watch item because it moves an unusual advanced-nuclear design through another government-review gate. It is not, by itself, a Nuclear Regulatory Commission licence, a completed reactor, a data-center power contract or proof that one-mile-underground nuclear will be commercially repeatable.

POWER Magazine reported the same milestone and added Parsons-site context: a 6,000-foot data acquisition well and a prototype reactor canister delivered to the Kansas site.

What it is not

This is not NRC licensing, not commercial operation, not delivered electricity and not proof that industrial parks or data centers will receive firm nuclear power.

What changed

Deep Fission’s release says the DOE approval establishes the safety framework for continued development and moves the company toward the next phase of the DOE authorization pathway. The company describes the Gravity Nuclear Reactor as a small modular pressurized water reactor installed about one mile underground.

The Parsons project is the practical test case. Deep Fission says it is not designed as a one-time criticality test; the company wants the demonstration reactor to become a fully NRC-licensed, commercially operating unit after initial testing and DOE authorization. That sentence matters because it shows the ambition: a path from pilot to commercial operation, not just a laboratory milestone.

POWER Magazine’s August 6 write-up gives additional reported context. It says Deep Fission is working at the Great Plains Industrial Park in Parsons, Kansas, has drilled a first data acquisition well to 6,000 feet and recently delivered a prototype reactor canister to the site. POWER also reports that the company has described a 15-MWe reactor concept that could scale by clustering multiple underground units.

The strongest direct source located today is Deep Fission’s own official release, syndicated through Business Wire and mirrored on the company site. POWER Magazine provides mainstream trade framing. I did not locate a separate DOE article naming this NSDA approval before publication, so the article attributes the DOE approval claim to Deep Fission and labels that source chain plainly.

Do not overclaim this as NRC approval, a construction permit, a fuel authorization, commercial criticality, a power-purchase agreement, a mine-electrification project or a solved AI/data-center energy pathway. The evidence supports a review-pathway milestone; the hard proof will be public authorization documents, NRC filings, construction/testing records, fuel arrangements, operating data and commercial contracts.
