Entergy–Holtec–Hyundai: Gulf South SMR-300 Evaluation, Not Delivered AI Power
The useful headline is narrow: Holtec International says it signed a non-binding memorandum of agreement with Entergy Services and Hyundai Engineering & Construction to evaluate potential SMR-300 projects for large-load customers across Entergy’s service territory.
That matters because the nuclear-for-AI story is moving from slogans toward the harder layers: utility territory, candidate sites, customer demand, commercial structure, construction partner, licensing route, fuel, grid integration and local acceptance. A non-binding evaluation is a real market signal. It is not a reactor order, an NRC approval, a power purchase agreement or proof that AI data centers in the Gulf South will receive nuclear megawatt-hours on a fixed date.

Holtec’s August 4 release says Holtec, Entergy Services and Hyundai E&C signed a non-binding MOA to evaluate customer demand, candidate sites and possible commercial structures for potential dual-unit SMR-300 projects.

The release frames the demand around industrial facilities, advanced manufacturing and AI-driven data centers in the U.S. Gulf South.
What it is not
The evidence supports an evaluation framework. It does not show a final site selection, construction permit, operating licence, financing close, delivered fuel or commercial electricity.
What changed
Holtec says the agreement establishes a framework for the three companies to jointly assess where SMR-300 deployment could fit future customer demand while complementing Entergy’s long-term resource planning and generation portfolio. The service-territory context is important: Entergy’s affiliates serve Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas, and the release explicitly names large-load customers.
Holtec describes the SMR-300 as a Generation III+ pressurized-water reactor using standard nuclear fuel and passive safety systems. In Holtec’s release, each unit is described as producing approximately 340 MWe net, with a standard dual-unit configuration around 680 MWe of firm power. World Nuclear News describes the design in broader terms as about 300 MW electric or 1050 MW thermal for process applications. Those are vendor/design figures, not delivered plant output from an operating fleet.
Hyundai E&C’s role is the project-delivery layer. Holtec says potential projects would use its integrated engineering, procurement and construction platform with Hyundai, while drawing on Holtec’s planned first-of-a-kind SMR-300 deployment at Palisades in Michigan as the reference plant for future deployments.
Why it belongs in the Energy watch
- Firm power is becoming a customer-specific question: this is not a generic “nuclear is back” release; it points to large industrial, manufacturing and AI/data-center loads inside a real utility footprint.
- Commercial structure is a gate: the parties are evaluating demand, sites and deal structures before any final build decision. That is exactly where many advanced-nuclear announcements still need proof.
- Construction partners matter: the bottleneck is not only reactor design; it is repeatable EPC delivery, manufacturing capacity, cost control and commissioning.
- Heat and power both matter: WNN’s thermal-output context keeps the industrial-heat angle visible, but no named industrial heat customer was announced in this MOA.
Cautions
Do not overclaim this as a signed power contract, a final SMR-300 order, NRC licensing, construction start, data-center nuclear power, Palisades success, Gulf South site approval or proof that advanced nuclear will beat gas, renewables, storage or grid upgrades on price and schedule. Holtec’s release is also forward-looking company material; World Nuclear News provides useful trade framing, but the core facts still come from the parties’ announcement.
