The headline is encouraging for advanced nuclear: a broader roster of companies is being moved into a prioritized support pathway. The expectation check is just as important: a pathway is not a power plant.

POWER Magazine reports that the Department of Energy's National Reactor Innovation Center selected 13 new projects across 12 companies for its Nuclear Energy Launch Pad initiative. American Nuclear Society / Nuclear Newswire adds that eight of the 12 companies had not previously been selected for one of the pilot programs or the Launch Pad, while several others are tied to earlier zero-power criticality milestones.

The selected companies named in trade reporting include Antares Nuclear, Atlas Atomics, Deployable Energy, Forge Atomics, Hexium, Lightbridge, Nusano, Oklo, Raven-Flint Nuclear, Scaled Atomics, Sublime Atomics and Valar Atomics. Deployable Energy has two projects in the round, bringing the project count to 13.

POWER reports that specific project scopes, host sites, technology categories and target authorization milestones were not disclosed in the NRIC announcement. That missing detail matters. A credible energy reader should treat the selections as a signal that the U.S. advanced-nuclear pipeline is widening, not as proof that each technology is ready for commercial service.

NRIC Director Brad Tomer is quoted by POWER saying Nuclear Energy Launch Pad gives developers a prioritized pathway to the DOE authorization process and access to subject-matter experts, facilities and regulatory support. That is useful infrastructure for first movers. It also means the practical questions now become more concrete: which site, which regulator, which fuel form, which customer, which financing stack, and which operating date?
