Ur-Energy’s Shirley Basin First Shipment: Uranium Supply Has a Mine-Site Gate

The useful headline is not “SMR fuel is solved.” It is narrower: Ur-Energy says it made the first uranium shipment from its Shirley Basin in-situ-recovery mine to its Lost Creek processing plant in Wyoming.

That belongs in the Energy watch because the SMR, advanced-nuclear, AI firm-power and mining-electrification stories all depend on a boring physical chain: mine output, processing, conversion, enrichment, fabrication, transport, licensing and final reactor loading. Shirley Basin’s first shipment is one real upstream gate moving. It is still not a fuel assembly, a HALEU supply breakthrough or a power contract.

What changed

Ur-Energy’s August 20 release says that on August 19 the company made its first shipment of uranium from the Shirley Basin mine to the Lost Creek processing plant. The company frames the milestone as the start of full operations at Shirley Basin and says the project moved from construction decision to production in about two and a half years.

World Nuclear News’ August 21 article independently surfaced the same milestone and added operating context: Shirley Basin sends loaded ion exchange resin roughly 190 miles to Lost Creek, where it is processed, dried and packaged as U3O8. WNN also notes nameplate capacity of about one million pounds U3O8 per year at Shirley Basin and about two million pounds U3O8 per year at Lost Creek.

Do not overclaim this as delivered reactor fuel, HALEU, a utility procurement contract, a data-centre power solution, an SMR fuel allocation, or proof that any advanced reactor will meet a deployment date.
